These days I gravitate towards easy-to-wear pieces that combine fashion and function, and if they streamline my routine, all the better. Case in point? This gorgeous 'Maya' wallet from the Matt & Nat x Indigo collection (now available at Indigo stores and through indigo.ca), which has integrated into my daily life seamlessly ever since I received it for review.
On days where I'm out the door and on the go for 12+ hours at a time, I really appreciate the versatility of the 'Maya' in taking me from day to night, functioning as a wallet, clutch, and wristlet depending on my needs. In the morning when I'm getting a coffee on the way to work, it's the wallet from which I pull out my loyalty card. During lunch, it becomes a convenient wristlet that allows me to leave my work tote or backpack behind while I pop out to my favourite salad bar to pick up something. (My phone and lip balm fit perfectly in the roomy exterior flap pocket.) And if I'm going out right after work or barre class, it transitions into a clutch with room for all the essentials—cards, cash, keys, phone, lipstick. The 'Maya' is just large enough—and sleek and streamlined enough—to look like you're carrying a real going-out purse instead of a wallet in your hands. I don't have to stash a small purse in a bigger bag, and having one less thing to carry is something for which my back and shoulders are very grateful!
Although this is my first Matt & Nat piece, I've long admired their designs and products. The vegan leather looks and feels almost like the real thing and is sturdy enough to stand up to wear and tear, and unlike real leather, you don't have to be too precious about spills, scratches or water—something I'm always nervous about when I use my designer leather bags. The Matt & Nat x Indigo limited-edition 'Maya' comes in mauve (shown here, a deep dusty rose/millennial pink) and light grey. The hardest part might be deciding which colour to get, but then again, at only $55 each, you might just be tempted to snap up both.
The clutch also earns brownie points for sustainability with its fabric lining made from recycled plastic bottles.
There are 8 built-in card slots inside the zippered compartment, which should be sufficient for all your major cards like ID, credit/debit, and transit pass. But what about things like gift cards and loyalty/membership cards? Modern life is just full of cards. My favourite life hack for organizing all of these other cards and stashing them in your wallet without creating bulk is to sort and group them into bundles using mini binder clips. I keep them in the zippered compartment and it doesn't make the 'Maya' bulky at all.
Other notes: the detachable wrist strap adds to the versatility and convenience factor; the brushed metal hardware feels like it's of good quality; the zipper glides effortlessly without sticking and the teeth aren't sharp (always something I'm wary of in metal zippers); there's no zipper tab sticking out on one end (another pet peeve), which makes the design look all the sleeker.
All in all, the Matt & Nat x Indigo 'Maya' is a serious contender if you're looking for a versatile and well-made wallet that can keep up with a modern urban lifestyle, all at a good price.
