Before I started transitioning into green beauty, my standby for shampoo and conditioner was always Pantene. I knew that if the bottle said "Pantene" and had any combination of the words "moisture," "anti-frizz," or "smoothing" on it, I was guaranteed shiny, soft, healthy-looking locks. Such was the case with the newly reformulated Pantene Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo & Conditioner ($6.49 on sale for $5.99 at London Drugs), which I received for review and couldn't resist taking for a spin.
Advertised as Pantene's biggest shampoo breakthrough in 30 years, these formulas claim to go beyond cleansing and coating strands with ingredients to truly nourish from within, resulting in hair that feels stronger and healthier with every wash. The formulas are also gentle and moisturizing enough for daily use without causing dryness or damage.
Ingredients-wise, Pantene's new shampoo and conditioner have many of the same controversial ingredients that other drugstore shampoos and conditioners boast: sulfates, silicones, artificial preservatives like methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone, fragrance. However, performance-wise, Pantene Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo & Conditioner deliver on all their claims and then some.
The shampoo creates a rich, dense lather that cleanses effectively without stripping hair of moisture, and remarkably for a shampoo, I can feel it soften and detangle—that's usually the conditioner's job! The conditioner, which I apply and leave on while I soap up, feels lightweight yet nourishing and rinses away cleanly. At the end of my shower, I can feel a difference—my hair is softer and smoother than ever—even though my locks are still damp.
And oddly enough, it feels cleaner than ever too, probably because the formulas aren't completed overloaded with silicones and keratin. I've tried such smoothing formulas in the past, and while I loved the results at first wash, my hair would become dull after a couple weeks and scalp build-up would form. After a while I'd have to switch to a clarifying shampoo once a week to get the same level of results. This is not the case with Pantene Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo & Conditioner: Hair feels clean and lightweight and soft each and every time. Every shampoo feels like the first shampoo, and although I've been testing for almost a month, there's been no noticeable build-up.
Another bonus? Usually I have to work some sort of smoothing or anti-frizz styling product into the ends of freshly washed hair before I air-dry or blow-dry to prevent the overly dry ends from puffing up and out. This is a step I can skip when I use Pantene Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo & Conditioner because my hair feels so moisturized and healthy.
I'm still keen on switching to natural formulas, so it's likely that the boy (who's also a longtime Pantene fan) will be using up the rest of my review sample on himself. But if you want a drugstore option that'll give you great hair without breaking the bank, Pantene Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo & Conditioner are solid contenders.
