Just in time for Valentine's Day and inspired by Dior's backstage secrets, Dior Addict Lip Sugar Scrub ($41) is a veritable sweet treat for the lips. It's the product you didn't think you needed, but somehow worms its way into your life and your makeup bag as an essential—and that's saying a lot considering I'm not usually a lip scrub girl.
Conventional lip scrubs annoy me for a host of reasons. Many are too grainy and abrasive, especially on winter-chapped lips, or they're messy to use (think dipping dirty fingers into a jar and getting sugar granules stuck under your nails). You need to be in front of a sink so you can rinse and wipe off every bit when you're done, and the jars themselves aren't exactly portable and convenient. It's no wonder then that I often forget to apply a lip scrub; they end up expiring in the medicine cabinet after a handful of uses.
Dior Addict Lip Sugar Scrub does away with all of these pet peeves. The frosted Lip Glow-like case is sleek, chic, and portable so you can exfoliate on the go. When you first open a brand new tube, you'll notice the bumpy, popcorn-like texture of the bullet's tip. This gives the product a nice massage effect the first few times you apply it, but the texture isn't the true source of the scrub's effectiveness.
Rather, the gentle exfoliating action comes from ultra-fine sugar granules and emollient ingredients like mango seed butter. (Word to the wise if you're concerned about certain ingredients: This product does contain fragrance and BHT. Despite my newfound resolution to go more natural with my beauty routine, I'm not concerned with the low concentrations of either ingredient in a lip product—but I'll explain that rationale in much greater detail some other time.)
This hybrid lip balm/scrub is a slow-acting exfoliant: The sugar granules melt away with a few presses of the lips and the colour-adjusting pigments give your pout a "my lips but better" pink tint much like Dior Addict Lip Glow. As the day wears on, the moisturizers absorb and chapped bits positively peel off on their own. My suggestion on how best to use the Dior Addict Lip Sugar Scrub? Swap it for your normal lip balm and apply it after your morning workout and throughout the day, for daytime-appropriate colour and increasingly soft lips. By the time evening rolls around, you'll be ready to rock the most dramatic matte shades with confidence.
