Although Consonant Body Dealkalizing Deodorant ($12 at BeautyMark) received a mention in this post already, I thought it was a product worth revisiting in an in-depth review because it truly is terrific. I'm not excessively stinky or sweaty in my everyday life or when I work out, but like most normal human beings I'm prone to perspiring and smelling kind of stale when I exert myself. This all-natural formula more than meets my needs.
Consonant Body Dealkalizing Deodorant reduces the pH of your skin's surface level to 4.5-5, thereby inhibiting odor-causing bacteria. Bentonite clay and arrowroot powder absorb moisture naturally while cocoa butter moisturizes the underarm area. In the last few weeks of thorough testing, I found that the formula was enough to prevent body odor and that stale, sweaty smell throughout the day.
Consonant Body is quick to note this is a deodorant, not an antiperspirant, formulated to prevent odor rather than sweating. That being said, for me the formula sufficiently inhibits "I'm wearing a sweater and the heat is on too high" and "I just had to sprint to catch my SkyTrain" levels of dampness when applied liberally, if not the "I've been salsa dancing for 3 hours" or "that was a brutal barre class" sort. The former concerns me more than the latter: Nobody wants to be caught with wet semi-circles in their armpits on the way to work or in the office, but when you're dancing up a storm or working out hard and you're just sweating everywhere, there's really no point worrying about your underarms.
All-natural products only appeal to me if they're as effective and easy to use as their conventional counterparts and the price difference isn't huge. We've already established its effectiveness. The form factor—a classic twist-up solid—is as easy as it gets. (No messing about with tubes of creamy goop.) At $12, it's not significantly more expensive than a drugstore deodorant. The aluminum-free formula is good news for those who are worried about potential health effects, and on a more practical note, it means no more yellow armpit stains in all your lovely white T-shirts. For all these reasons and more, Consonant Body Dealkalizing Deodorant just might be my new Holy Grail deodorant.
Yea, yea, yea! Thanks so much for reviewing this, Lisa! I'm always on the look out for better all natural deodorants and this seems to fit the bill. I love that you are concerned about its effectiveness as well. I can't tell you the number of natural deodorants that do not work at all. I like making my own (coconut oil, baking soda and arrowroot powder with drops of lavender oil), but it hardens up too much in the winter to be easy to apply. I'm currently using Schmidt's lavender stick -- smells great, works pretty well, but it's so grainy it exfoliates my armpits when I put it on and crumbles everywhere.
ReplyDeleteSo again, thanks so much for always keeping you reviews so informative and honest. I'm going to buy some right now!
xoxox, Lar
You're welcome, Lar! This one does have a tendency to crumble on the edge of the plastic case (maybe it's the way I press it hard or the angle I'm swiping at?), but I just run my finger along the edge to scoop up the excess product and rub it into my underarms.
