Last week, gorgeous blogger Alixrose tweeted about wearing dresses over jeans and asked followers whether it's a do or a don't. I replied, "Hehe I'm wearing jeans under my shirtdress today! imo it doesn't look ridiculous b/c so many 'dresses' today are short and tunic-like, so you can just wear them as long shirts!" I promised Alixrose I'd post the outfit and give her a shout-out, so here it is.
As you can see, wearing a dress over jeans isn't the only style rule I'm breaking here. There's also pattern-mixing (the striped scarf with the smaller stripe of the shirtdress) and some mixing of metals (gold earrings and bracelet, silver flats). Oh, and the cuffed jeans? It's purely the influence of the Japanese fashion magazines I picked up. All the girls were doing it to show off slender ankles and cute shoes, and the proportions really worked with their petite stature.
Do you enjoy breaking fashion rules or are you a stickler for them? Which ones have you flouted lately?
- Shirtdress (H&M)
- Jeans (Banana Republic)
- Ballet flats (Yosi Samra)
- Scarf (vintage)
- Bracelet (Lysh & Lo)
- Earrings (Swarovski, gift from a friend)
Love the outfit!
ReplyDeleteI'm always cuffing my jeans then mixing metals and patterns.
lisa!! :))) haha gosh it's been so long since i've commented!! my bad...
ReplyDeletei wouldn't really consider a dress with jeans breaking rules! :) after all, dresses (depending on the length) can always be worn with capri pants or long pants too...
heh i guess i wish i could be more of a rulebreaker/risktaker when it comes to fashion... but in the end I end up with what works for my body shape. It would be so much easier if I had a model's body but then that's not the case... Models have it so easy because everything works for them! :P i guess it's not so bad though, facing the trials of learning how to dress one's own unique body.
btw!! i'm going to the U.S for a holiday soon! :P Need your advice on shops to go to!! Shops vs department stores like Nordstroms or JC Penney... ??
I never think of rules when it comes to dress, although there are things that I never would stop to put together. Stripes with plaid for example.. it's something that I don't see.
ReplyDeleteFor dress with pants.. I think that it doesn't break any rule either, all the contrary. There are too many t-shirts that makes the function of almost a dress. It depends more the type of pants that you put with.

Super cute outfit Lisa! It's very nautical.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny because that same shirt-dress is definitely a tunic on me so I always wear it with pants or, at least, leggings.
I always stand by my belief that there are no rules in fashion - just use common sense. I certainly would not wear a super dressy silk dress with pants but the casual cotton, wool and jersey ones are usually OK.
BTW, there is a super cute tunic/shirt-dress on my blog today that I think you'll like.
This is super cute, I am definitely trying to break more fashion rules and the dress over pants is one I like to do often ;-)
ReplyDeleteI live to be a REBEL. Today I wore a silver ring and bronze toned shoes, but I often mix my patterns, and it gives me a thrill to wear black and brown :P
ReplyDeleteCute outfit!
Gorgeous, darling!
ReplyDeleteI love breaking the rules too!

Now that is a scarf!
ReplyDeleteKudos to you for breaking so many style rules. If we all stuck to the rules, we'd have some pretty boring outfits.

dresses can definitely be done over jeans; especially in shirt dress form! great exsample of breaking fashion rules lisa!
ReplyDeleteI do like the combo. Also, depends on what kind of jeans you pair up with. The ones you have are too cute. Love the outfit.
ReplyDeleteI love breaking the rules! and not only the fashion ones :-P hehe...so I applaud you for doing that! :)
ReplyDeleteThx for your sweet comment...I will definitely do a post with some wedding photos after we come back from Dominican:)

it's okay, I wore a bf shirt over dress pants at work today, but I belted it and it looked fine. I love your vintage scarf, it adds the perfect touch to your outfit :)
ReplyDeleteHmmm...guess which side of the rules I fall on! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI do like the cuffed jeans and the mixed stripes, though I could never pull off the cuffed jeans =[
