In preparation for a busy fall, I've been thinking a lot about how to streamline my life lately, which includes getting ready in the mornings. Evidently beauty entrepreneur Melanie Cruickshank feels the same way because her Toronto-based line da lish Cosmetics is all about "uncomplicated beauty." Think creamy textures that can be blended on skin with fingertips, sans brushes—ideal for touch-ups on the go or achieving that no-makeup makeup look in a hurry.
Personally, I'm into the Illuminating Concealer, which imparts the perfect dewy finish, and the Lip/Cheek Balms (pigmented, portable, and in an almond-shaped twist-up that allows for precise application on the lips). The best part? da lish is formulated using high concentrations of natural and nourishing ingredients like shea butter, safflower and sunflower seed oils, and soothing rosemary extract.
I had a chance to catch up with Melanie to learn more about da lish and what's next for this up-and-coming natural beauty line.
What inspired you to start da lish?
I used to suffer from terrible acne and wanted to create a line in which I know where all the ingredients come from, and that's good for my skin.
I love how da lish focuses on "uncomplicated beauty essentials." Is uncomplicated beauty something you hold dear to your heart?
Very much so. Things have to be simple. Make up should be fun, easy, and uncomplicated. Something you look forward to playing with each day.
What were some of the challenges you encountered in taking your business from the kitchen to something much bigger?
There were many, but I knew the differences I was making in women’s lives and I was up for the challenge of making it happen. If it was easy, everyone would do it!
What are your favourite, can't-live-without-them products?
The Silk-to-Matte Foundation in FO2, the Illuminating Concealer in CO2, the Lip/Cheek Balm in BO4 Bronzer, the Metallic Collection Eye Shadow in HO1 Highlighter, and Matte Lipstick in LO2. They are my staples.
I noticed on the website that da lish skincare is coming soon. Can you tell us a bit more?
We’ve had our skin care line since 2006 and have decided to rebrand and package it to be in line with our make up. I can’t wait until its launched, so stay tuned.
What's next for you, personally and professionally?
Travel, travel, and more travel. This has been a huge year for expansion for da lish. We’re sold throughout Canada and Asia and hoping to have 25 new locations in the U.S. by the end of the year. I’ve been going to a new city each month to meet with retailers and media outlets. It's been very fun and exciting.
In Vancouver, you can find da lish Cosmetics at LYNNsteven.
